Self-executing code deployed on a blockchain that automatically enforces the terms of an agreement.
A smart contract is computer code stored on a distributed ledger that executes predetermined logic when specified conditions are met. Legal enforceability depends on whether the underlying agreement satisfies contract formation requirements (offer, acceptance, consideration, intent). MiCA, the EU Data Act, and several national frameworks now address smart contract requirements including kill-switches, access controls, and equivalent legal effect.
