The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive horizontal regulation of AI systems. It applies a risk-tiered model: prohibited practices (Article 5), high-risk systems (Annex III), limited-risk systems with transparency obligations, and minimal-risk systems. Separate rules apply to general-purpose AI (GPAI) models, with stricter obligations for those with systemic risk. Most provisions phase in between February 2025 and August 2027.
